In South Africa, a private pilot license (PPL) is issued by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and allows the holder to act as the pilot in command of an aircraft for non-commercial purposes.

1] Eligibility

  • You must be at least 15 years old to go solo and 17 years old before you can obtain your Private Pilot License
  • Student Pilot License
  • A minimum of a Class 2 medical certificate obtained from an approved aviation medical examiner. We can assist you in making the relevant appointments.
  • Must pass all theoretical SACAA exams
  • Meet the English Language Proficiency standards

2] Theoretical Training

Students are expected to pass the following subjects with at least 75% before they can qualify for the Private Pilot License:

  • Principles of Flight
  • Air Law
  • Meteorology
  • Navigation
  • Flight Planning and Performance
  • Human Performance and Limitations
  • Aircraft Technical and General
  • Restricted Radio Telephony Certificate

3] Practical Training

The minimum number of hours required to obtain your Private Pilot License on a fixed wing aircraft are 45, which consists of:

  • At least 25 hours of dual flight training with an instructor
  • At least 5 hours of dual cross-country navigation flight with an instructor
  • 15 hours of solo flight training, including a minimum of 5 hours solo cross-country navigation flight
  • Practical flight and navigational skill test

N.B:Navigation training could be extended to compensate for controlled airspace communication.

Each flying session includes a theoretical and / or briefing component before and after each flight. The student is required to prepare beforehand.


A commercial pilot license (CPL) in South Africa is a type of pilot certificate issued by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) that allows the holder to act as the pilot in command of an aircraft for commercial purposes.

Once obtained, a CPL in South Africa allows the holder to fly for hire or reward, such as flying for an airline or a charter company. Additionally, holders of CPLs are also allowed to act as flight instructors and to conduct flight training for other pilots.

  • You need to be at least 18 years old
  • Valid Private Pilot License
  • Valid Night Rating
  • Total of 200 hours of flight time (CPL)

2] Course Duration

Incorporated with the hour building and instrument rating time. This phase can last 24 weeks (6 months)

4] Practical Training

  • Minimum 100 hours pilot in command
  • Minimum 10 hours pilot in command by night
  • Minimum 50 hours cross-country (CPL with IF)
  • Minimum 20 hours cross-country (CPL only)
  • Minimum 40 hours instrument flying (20 hours can be on a simulator)
  • Pass a practical skills flight test with a Designated Flight Examiner
